1996-97 Contest Winners
HUNDREDS OF STUDENTS across the state soon will be turning their ears and minds to classical music as the Minnesota High School Music Listening Contest (MLC) gets underway.
This year's contest includes repertoire from medieval to contemporary. Special focus areas will include keyboard music, gamelan music of Java and Bali, and one of the world's great composers.
To encourage participation by smaller schools, this year MLC will hold four A regional competitions and four AA regional competitions. The winners from each region will then compete with one another at the state competitions. This way the A and AA schools will be competing separately at the regional level and together at the state level. Regional competition locations will be announced in mid-November. Schools may or may not be assigned to the same regional competition site they had in previous years.
Registration deadline: October 4, 1996
TALK TO YOUR LOCAL TEACHERS, start a team, or volunteer to coach. If your school has never been involved before, urge it to participate!
Last year more than 500 young people enjoyed the thrill of competing in the contest's regional and state competitions. The scope of the contest drew media attention nationwide while the participants expanded their listening horizons and learned to identify composers, musical periods, and styles -- all while having a fun and sociable experience.
YOU'RE LOOKING at the MLC homepage. Check here often for announcements, updates, and news of other enhancements to the MLC Web site from now through the final competition this winter.
