He sold songs for what today amounts to a few dollars a piece. One Schubert scholar estimates that he made only about $12,500 over 12 years! His "circle" of friends often provided lodging and meals for him: not to mention paying for drinks at the cafes. He left no real possessions or estate when he died on November 19, 1828.
