John Duffy is not necessarily a household name, but he has made a big
impact in musical circles. He has composed more than 300 works for orchestra,
theater, television, and film. Duffy is also the founder of "Meet
the Composer," begun in 1974, an organization dedicated to the creation,
performance, and recording of music by American composers. He is a native
of New York, and studied with Aaron Copland, Henry Cowell, and Luigi Dallapiccola,
et al. Duffy as been music director/composer of many theater houses, including
the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. In conversation with John Zech, he
will talk about his music and his life as a composer.
