The Morning Show Home | About the Show | Features | Make a Dedication

The Morning Show presented an evening of holiday comedy and song at the Fitzgerald Theater on December 6, 2002. Canadian folk diva Connie Kaldor performed some holiday favorites, and the Jaztronauts warmed things up with a bit of swing, jive, and modern jazz.

The centerpiece of the evening was The Morning Show Holiday Pageant Players' unique version of A Christmas Carol, with local actor and director Peter Moore as Ebenezer Scrooge, Genway founder Dr. Larry Kyle as Jacob Marley, lyrically challenged vocalist Mel Lightner as the Ghost of Christmas Past, international fugitive Captain Billy as the Ghost of Christmas Present, and beloved journalist Bud Buck as Bob Crachit.

The Jaztronauts
The Jaztronauts are Joe Weismann on bass and vocals, Jason "Buddy" Weismann on sax and vocals, Jim Kennedy on piano and vocals, and Morris Engel on drums and vocals.

From somewhere in the Bermuda Triangle that lurks between swing, jive, and modern jazz emanate the Space Age strains of the band that ties swinging instrumental work with smooth vocal harmonies into a tight audio Windsor knot, ideally suited to the purpose, whether that be lounging or Lindy-hopping.

A genius to some, an idiot savant to most, Jim Kennedy has played with every band in the world and even launched into the lucrative world of performance art. Many millions later, he realized he was tired of the whole naked thing and promptly joined "Joey's Nuts." Now fans at home and abroad can enjoy the scintillating "Joey's Nuts."

Joe Weismann's parents wished for only one thing: that he be the best carpet-layer in the village. In a freak carpet-laying accident, young Joe had his elbows stapled together. As part of his rehabilitation program, Joe was given a gigantic bass fiddle to lug around. After several years with the albatross, he eventually removed it from its case and began "messing around" on it.

Morris Engel bows to Saul "Kishka" Liebermann as his ultimate musical beacon. It was Saul's portrayal of the zany yet lovable Russian nudnik schlimazl, Yehudah Yehupetz in the smash If it's Kugel, I'm Stayin', that began a collaboration between the Bluegrass Repertory and the Musshuginah Players. Today, Morris continues in the tradition of these country Talmudic jesters, playing those drums not quite like anyone else.

Aside from being an accomplished saxophonist and puppeteer, Jason "Buddy" Weismann has recently lent his considerable talents to the field of rapping. "Slayin' sucka deejays with his killa rhymes" is now the name of the tgame for Buddy. here is an excerpt from one of this homeboy's freshest raps: Rap a tap a rappati tap/a rap rap rap rap a rapppitiiti tap/a rap tap tapi tapi RAPPITI TAP!!

Connie Kaldor Band
Connie Kaldor's band comprises Connie on piano, acoustic guitar, and vocals; Paul Campagne on guitar, bass, and vocals; and William Gossage on bass, violin, and vocals.

Connie Kaldor is a performer without borers. Called "indecently talented" by the Toronto Star, she is a Juno award-winning singer who has flourished on the folk music scene for over two decades, yet her repertoire of original material blurs musical boundaries, embracing elements of gospel, rock, country and western, folk, bluegrass, and adult contemporary.

About Dale Connelly and Jim Ed Poole
Dale Connelly is the latest in a long family line of calm-voiced zombies who seem to float along with little connection to surrounding events. Dale has been with MPR since 1976, the same year that brought us Jimmy Carter as president. Carter has since moved on. Connelly remains entrenched.

Jim Ed Poole, otherwise known as "Jim Ed Poole," joined MPR in the heady days just after the invention of electricity. In the many years that have followed, he has steadfastly held to his youthful pledge to use his talents "only in the name of good."
