This summer, Eric Friesen, former Minnesota Public Radio host and a current voice on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, returns to MPR to host a 13-week series of Canada’s finest classical music recordings.

Designed exclusively for Minnesota Public Radio, the CBC’s OnStage with Eric Friesen features a first-class blend of concert music from venues across Canada, in addition to extended interviews with leading classical, jazz and world music talent.

June 6 National Arts Centre Orchestra, Pinchas Zukerman soloist, James Judd, conductorA highlight from the National Arts Centre, Ottawa, with Pinchas Zukerman, soloist in the Elgar Violin Concerto in B Minor, opus 61, and also the Bach Ricercare and Stravinsky's Firebird Suite.
June 13 Alfred Brendel, Piano, from Los Angeles and Vancouver. Includes an extended interview with host Eric Friesen. The last of his generation of Great Pianists, taped during his 70th birthday tour. Repertoire includes Haydn's Sonata in G Minor, Hob. XVI/44; Mozart, Fantasy in D Minor, K 397; Mozart Sonata in A Minor, K310; Beethoven, Diabelli Variations, Opus 120.
June 20 The six member Baltimore Consort and their unique style, which treads the line between folk and art music, has been a huge hit with audiences everywhere they go. This time around, the Canadian baroque violinist and traditional fiddler David Greenberg and Canadian piper and flutist Pat O'Gorman join the Consort in a program of early and traditional music from Scotland and North America.
June 27 Celebrating the 100th anniversary of L'Orchestre Symphonie du Quebec (Quebec Symphony Orchestra, Quebec City), Canada's oldest orchestra: OSQ, led by Music Director Yoav Talmi, with violin soloist James Ehnes.Saint-Saëns, Violin Concerto #3, Beethoven's Symphony #7, and the world premiere of Iris, by Montreal composer, Jose Evangelista.
July 4 The Canadian Brass and Nexus have been blowing audiences away for over 30 years. OnStage with Eric Friesen is proud to present these two virtuosic Canadian ensembles together for the first time. On the program, an arrangement of J.S. Bach's Toccata & Fugue with African Drums, Mark Mellit's Groove Fugue, as well as music by Nexus member, Robin Engelman.
July 11 Anton Kuerti, the St. Lawrence String Quartet and friends.A highlight concert from Anton Kuerti's Carl Czerny Festival in Edmonton. One of our most popular shows.World premieres (150 years later) of Czerny's String Quartet in E Minor, Prestissimo Agitato, from Piano Sonata #1 in A-flat Major, opus 7; Allegro Fugato in C minor, opus 177, and two songs: "The Treasures of the Deep" and "O Call My Brother Back."
July 18 OnStage with Eric Friesen presents the British-based Hilliard Ensemble. This award-winning vocal quartet presents 'Revelations', a program of new music from Latvia, Russia, and Canada as well as music by Machaut, Lassus and Jacquet de Mantua.
July 25 Hyperion recording artist and pianist Angela Hewitt performs Bach's English Suite No.5, Beethoven's Piano Sonata No.15 in D major, op.28, Ravel's Sonatine, and Schumann's Sonata No.1 in f# minor, op.11.

August 8 The CBC Radio Orchestra is conducted for the first time by the rising young Canadian conductor Yannick Nezet-Seguin. In this concert, Nezet-Seguin conducts Mendelssohn's Symphony No.1 in c minor and Prokofiev's Symphony No.1 ('Classical'). Sony recording artist, cellist Denise Djokic, joins the orchestra to play Haydn's Cello Concerto No.1 in D major.
August 15 The Manitoba Chamber Orchestra is conducted by its resident conductor Roy Goodman in Telemann's Concerto Polonois in Bb major and Intermezzo for Strings by the Canadian composer Peter Paul Koprowski. Hyperion recording artist, the pianist, Marc-André Hamelin joins the orchestra to play Chopin's Piano Concerto No.1 in e minor in a new arrangement for Strings and timpani by Roy Goodman.
August 22 Red Priest is one of the major success stories on the early music scene today. Named after the red-haired priest, Vivaldi, this British ensemble has redefined the art of period performance, combining swashbuckling virtuosity, heart-on-sleeve emotion and compelling stagecraft. For this OnStage concert with Eric Friesen, Red Priest collaborates with the Canadian soprano Suzie LeBlanc, a singer who specializes in the early baroque and classical periods.
August 29 Jackie Parker and his younger brother Jamie are two of the busiest Canadian pianists around. Their respective solo and chamber obligations leave them little time to perform together. Don't miss this chance to hear this rare collaboration in an all-Rachmaninoff programme.
