Act four takes place outside at night in the garden. Barbarina has been entrusted to return the pin that sealed the covert letter to Susanna, as confirmation of the tryst. She has lost the pin, and is searching the garden desparately when Figaro happens on the scene. Barbarina leaves, and Figaro discloses to Marcellina what he believes to be Susanna's infidelity. Marcellina advises him not to rush to judgment, and after Figaro leaves she goes to warn Susanna, whom she believes to be innocent.

Barbarina prepares to meet Cherubino at the pavilion, as Figaro sings about the deceitful, predatory nature of women. Susanna, knowing she is being overheard by Figaro, sings in happy anticipation of her lovers' tryst, the Count arrives and from here on plays out a series of cases of mistaken identities and missed opportunities until all are finally reunited - the Count and Countess, Barbarina and Cherubino, Marcellina and Bartolo and, of course, Figaro and Susanna.
