Telemann: Don Quichotte Suite
Saturday, August 23, in the 8 am CT hour
This light-hearted suite, by one of the Baroque era's most prolific composers, depicts the characters and scenes from Cervantes' comical story of Don Quixote, from his sidekick Sancho Panza to the attack on the windmills to his sighs of love for Dulcinea del Toboso.

Stephen Paulus: Pilgrim's Hymn
Sunday, August 24, in the 2 pm CT hour
This hymn comes from Paulus' one-act church opera The Three Hermits, a story based on a Russian folk tale about a bishop who visits three hermits on an isolated island to teach them the Lord's Prayer. After much difficulty, the slow-learning hermits finally succeed in singing this serenely beautiful hymn.

Stravinsky: Suite Italienne
Monday, August 25, in the 9 am CT hour
Written in the image of a Baroque partita, this suite contains both the form and harmony that we'd find in eighteenth-century works. With elements of Stravinsky's modern playfulness woven in, it's a fun and light work.

Cesar Franck: Symphonic Variations
Tuesday, August 26, in the 3 pm CT hour
Certainly one of Franck’s most highly organized and theoretically complex works, the Symphonic Variations can be described simply as a transformation. The piece begins as sort of a dialogue between the orchestra and piano, then it gradually transforms into a deep, reflective mood, concluding with a somewhat frivolous finale, in which the two original voices almost seem to dance together.

Special series

BBC Proms,concert I
Saturday, August 23, 1 pm CT
This is the first of a series of four special concerts from the biggest classical music festival in the world, the BBC Proms. This week, two leading Baroque orchestras—The English Concert and the Academy of Ancient Music—team up under the direction of Andrew Manze to celebrate the 350th anniversary of Corelli with music on a grand scale.
