My Heart Will Go On
Listener Submission: Most Unusual Wedding
Music Story
I went to the wedding of a guy I'd known in college and expected
the standard package: big white dress, big decorated church,
flower girls, organ hymns, 3-4 bridesmaids and groomsmen,
the whole production.
Everything went exactly as expecteduntil the priest
handed the bride and groom cordless mics. Everyone cleared
away from the bride and groom at the altar and someone lit
a spotlight.
There was a moment of silence. And then I heard first strains
of Celine Dion's Titanic tearjerker, "My Heart
Will Go On" . . . a song that celebrates the triumph
of love after death.
They were doing a performance number in the middle of their
wedding. And the soon-to-be newlyweds weren't singing to each
other, either. The bride was working the crowd like Celine
herself, while the groom stood off to the side waiting for
his back-up vocal cues.
My date and I were so shocked, we could barely contain our
laughter. We spent the entire, eternal song with dumb smiles
plastered on our faces.
