Act 3 - 4: Di tua man l'uccidesti?

Tosca is escorted into the prison; Cavaradossi reads the document she carries.

Cavaradossi
Safe conduct to Floria Tosca and to the man with her!

Tosca
You are free!

Cavaradossi
Scarpia allowed this?
The first time he's shown mercy.

Tosca
And the last!
He demanded your blood or my love...
My tears and pleas were useless.
In vain, crazy with fear,
I prayed to the Madonna and the Saints.
The monster only said:
The gallows lift their arms to the skies!
I could hear the drums;
the monster was laughing.
He was ready to seize his prey!
I promised to give in to his lust.
I saw a knife nearby -
he was writing the order that would free you.
He came at me;
I plunged the knife deep into his heart!

Cavaradossi

You? You killed him with your hands?
You, so kind and pious, for me.

Tosca
  My hands were covered with his blood.

Cavaradossi
Oh sweet hands, so tender and gentle. Hands, dedicated to goodness and piety, To caress children, to pick roses,
To pray for the unfortunate.
Did Justice entrust
Her sacred purpose to you?
You have dealt death,
Oh victorious hands.
Oh sweet hands, so gentle and pure.
