In the first three
interviews, Minnesota Public Radio music host Brandi Parisi holds a roundtable
discussion with several members of The Turn of the Screw production. Participating
are Conductor Joel Revsen, Stage Director David Roth, Rosalind Sutherland (the
Governess), and Marianne Cornetti (Mrs. Grose).
Ms. Parisi also talks with Dale Johnson, the artistic director of the Minnesota
Opera.
(The
interviews are in RealAudio 3.0 format: see how
to listen.)
Small-cast roundtable: The participants talk
about the experience of working so closely with so few people - the cast has only
six performers, and there are only 14 players in the pit, a substantially smaller
group than most opera productions.
Musical alliterations: Joel
Revzen illuminates Britten's use of particular (and unusual) instrumentation in
various parts of the opera to musically illustrate mood, motive, and character.
The amorphous opera:
The cast discusses the many different ways the work can be interpreted, how the
piece has evolved through the rehearsal process, and how their own parts were
changing - even up to opening night - with the additions of set, stage, and especially
lighting.
Dale Johnson: The
artistic director of the Minnesota Opera gives an overview of The Turn of the
Screw's history, the play itself, and the current production of the
opera.
