Act 1 - 10: Qual é il vostro disegno?
Cavaradossi
Tosca is a good woman,
but she can keep nothing from her confessor.
It's prudent that I said nothing.

Angelotti
Are we alone?

Cavaradossi
Yes! What is your plan?

Angelotti
I could leave the country or hide in Rome.
My sister...

Cavaradossi
The Attavanti?

Angelotti
She has hidden some women's clothing under the altar.
There's a dress, a veil and a fan....
I'll put them on when it gets dark.

Cavaradossi
Now I understand.
That secretive behavior and fervent devotion
made me suspect there was a secret love affair.
Now I understand.
It was the love of a sister.

Scarpia

Angelotti
She has dared all to rescue me from Scarpia.

Cavaradossi
Scarpia! That bigoted satyr
who hides his lust behind a mask of piety,
and, to feed his vicious appetite,
acts as both confessor and executioner.
Though it may cost me my life,
I'll save you!
But we must not wait for nightfall.

Angelotti
I fear the daylight!

Cavaradossi
The chapel leads out into a garden.
From there, a path leads through fields to my villa.

Cavaradossi
Here is the key.
I'll return before evening.
Take the clothes with you.

Angelotti
Should I wear them?

Cavaradossi
There's no need now. The path is deserted.
If there's trouble, run to the garden well.
There's water at the bottom,
but halfway down a narrow passageway
leads to a secret room where you'll be safe.

The sound of distant cannon is heard.

Angelotti
The cannon of the fortress!

Cavaradossi
You've been discovered!
Scarpia will already be unleashing his hounds!
I will go with you. Be on guard!

Angelotti
Someone is coming!

Cavaradossi
We'll fight if we have to!
