The Morning Show | Historic Theater Project | Worthington

Live from Worthington's Memorial Auditorium & Performing Arts Center—February 14, 2003

Dale and Jim Ed celebrated the day of love with music from singer/songwriters Neal and Leandra, and Peter Mayer. Neal and Leandra are happily married Morning Show regulars who have charmed MPR audiences for years with love songs. Peter Mayer has addressed some deep topics in his writing but claims he has "never written a love song."

The show also includes the results of our Some Enchanted Evening special, in which listeners were invited to send us the story of how they met their special someone. Dale and Jim Ed, and the rest of the Morning Show crew retold some lucky listeners' stories in song live on the Feb. 14 show.

About the auditorium
The 735-seat Memorial Auditorium & Performing Arts Center is a 1931 art deco theater owned and operated by the City of Worthington. The renovated and newly restored building is one of the largest auditorium facilities in the region of southern Minnesota and northern Iowa.

Neal and Leandra
Neal and Leandra met at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota, in 1981. Off-again, on-again dating, excursions into graduate school (Leandra in Spanish, Neal receiving a master's of divinity) only resulted in a postponement of careers as singers/songwriters. They married in 1989 and began touring as a duo full time.

The simplicity and directness of their songs is both disarming and elegant. The songs are laywered with textures of everyday life and love. When they are not touring or recording, Neal and Leandra reside in Minneapolis with their daughter Madeline, where Neal plays a lot of basketball and Leandra reads many books.

Peter Mayer
Mountains and motorcycles, pigs, pubs, and planets; insight, hope, and humor—such are the ingredients one finds in the songs of Peter Mayer. Mayer's songs are fresh and unique, earthy and intimate. The standard lyrical menu of love lost and found is not among his offering, but rather, an eclectic blend of thoughtful songs about the collective human journey. His inventive guitar work and honest delivery provide the perfect vehicle for his down-home wisdom.

As a solo artist, Peter performs 130-plus shows a year at acoustic music venues throughout the United States.
