Odes to Joy home

My husband, Sam, and I are both musicians by trade. Sam is a high-school band director and I am a Lutheran church music director. For our June, 1998 wedding, we wanted to choose music that reflected both our passions. Since it was logistically overwhelming to have his high-school concert band play, we had our organist play Ralph Vaughan Williams' "Rhosemedrye," which Sam has performed in an arrangement for his concert band. (We even timed the entrance of each member of the wedding party to coordinate with the appearance of each line of the tune, also known as that familiar hymn, "My Song is Love Unknown.")

Once everyone was in place and the opening prayers had been said, my church choir (a less logistically overwhelming ensemble) made their way to the front and sang a rousing rendition of "O Happy Day," with gospel singer Anthony Brewer. It was a wonderful day and wonderfully meaningful music for both Sam and me.
