A Mother's Blessing My mother is of Hispanic background and, at the end of the ceremony, both my mother and my husband's mother were to bless us with a mother's blessing. We were kneeling, after the priest had blessed us, and we were facing the congregation of our family and friends. Our mothers placed a satin cord/sash over our shoulders to show that they, too, had blessed the wedding and joined us together. The musician, who was a good friend of mine, then started singing the traditional mother's blessing song. The first verse was sung in English, and then, as a surprise, she sang it in Spanish (my mom did not know that Karen had learned it in Spanish to make it much more special for my mom). My mother and I started crying as we heard the lyrics in a more meaningful wayin words and emotions that cannot be properly translated into English. Our anniversary was June 1; we've been married 17 years. Christina Bigelow |
