Odes to Joy home

By 1972, the Beatles as a group were history. Yet, I was bound and determined to incorporate their influence, which had inspired my coming-of-age during the '60s, into the wedding ceremony with my high school sweetheart.

The quandry was what tune to choose from such a prolific song list. "I Want to Hold Your Hand" or "Twist and Shout" just didn't quite convey the essence and solemnity of the event. And our parents would not stand for "Can't Buy Me Love" or "Help!"

I very nearly persuaded my bride-to-be that "When I'm Sixty-Four" would have just the right lilt and lyrical message. But, she said she'd rather settle for "Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da."

So, we began to do what most married couples learn to do early—we compromised. We chose a lesser known ballad from The White Album appropriately titled "I Will." The mood of the song was just right for the occasion and to us the lyrics ring as true today as they did in that meaningful ceremony back in the summer of '72!
