Odes to Joy home

I am a singer, and was delighted when my husband's cousin and his bride-to-be, both close friends, asked if I would please sing for their wedding. I said I would be delighted, and mentioned a few rather demanding classical pieces they might like me to sing, such as "Let the Bright Seraphim," etc. However, as things turned out, when the wedding date was finally set, it was exactly three weeks prior to my due date with our second daughter!

Air to sing with is hard to come by for sopranos when they are 8-plus months pregnant. With my voice teacher's help, I chose two pieces with blessedly short phrases: "Perhaps Love" by John Denver, and "Walk Hand in Hand With Me," and sang them to the bridal couple over the phone. They loved the new music, and wanted very much for me to sing, so we went ahead with our plan.

The wedding was in a beautiful mansion in the Garden District of New Orleans. I sang accompanied by a very talented harpist to rave reviews. Later, the bride told me that they had invited three ob-gyn physician friends and warned them of my "condition" before the wedding! At the reception we all enjoyed a good laugh describing the wedding with the phrase: "It ain't over till the fat lady sings!" Our daughter was born 3 1/2 weeks later, happy and healthy. I will always remember that wedding!
